Happen Bank Personal Loans Review
Published Date: 2024-07-10; Last Updated: 2026-09-01
Happen Bank, formerly known as LendingClub, is an online provider of personal loans and other consumer finance products. It was founded in 2006 as a peer-to-peer (p2p) lender platform—a type of marketplace matching borrowers with investors willing to give them money. In 2020, it shut down its peer-to-peer lending platform and transitioned toward operating as a digital bank following its acquisition of Radius Bank, and in 2026 it rebranded as Happen Bank.
Prospective borrowers may benefit from competitive starting rates and flexible loan features, but may be turned off by potential origination fees.
Loan Options
Happen Bank offers unsecured personal loans between $1,000 and $75,000, with some amounts, rates and terms unavailable in certain states.
Loan lengths range from 2 to 7 years.
Happen Bank may allow coborrowers on loans, which could improve your chances of approval, as the legal responsibility to repay the loan will be shared by multiple people. Simply apply as two of you and enter some basic information about each borrower.
Loans cannot be used for education after high school, investments such as securities or cryptocurrency, or any illegal activity.
Interest & Fees
APR: Happen Bank personal loans have fixed rates from 5.96% to 35.96%. Their disclosure is dated, so it is worth checking it against the date on the page.
Origination Fee: Happen Bank may charge an origination fee of 0% to 8% of the approved loan amount, which is automatically deducted from the loan proceeds. It is included in the APR above, so the APR is the figure to compare on.
Prepayment Penalty: Borrowers do not incur any fees if they wish to pay off their loan early.
Late Payment: Happen Bank say they may assess late fees on payments more than 15 days late, but no longer publish the amount. NerdWallet report it as $15 or 5% of the monthly payment, whichever is greater.
Discounts: Happen Bank don't offer an explicit discount for paying creditors directly, but borrowers will likely receive better terms if they accept what they call a Direct Pay loan, which sends the money to your existing credit cards and personal loans rather than to your account.
Example
Happen Bank's published example is a $15,262 loan over 36 months at a 13.99% interest rate with a 6% origination fee. The fee takes $916, so $14,346 reaches your account, and you repay $522 a month at an APR of 18.40%. Open the same figures in our payment calculator.
How long to receive funds?
Happen Bank publish a measured figure rather than a promise: between January and March 2026, 64% of loans approved for funding on a business day were disbursed within 24 hours. When the money reaches you after that depends on your own bank.
If you take a Direct Pay loan the money goes to your creditors instead, and Happen Bank's own advice is to keep paying those balances until each creditor confirms the payment has been applied, rather than assuming it has landed.
Geographical Availability
Happen Bank accepts personal loan applications from residents of all 50 states and Washington DC, though their disclosure notes that some amounts, rates and term lengths are unavailable in certain states.
Loan Eligibility
Happen Bank do not publish a minimum credit score. NerdWallet report it as 600.
Income Requirements
No information on minimum income thresholds has been publicly disclosed.
Are they legit?
Yes. Happen Bank is the current name of LendingClub, which was founded in 2006 and initially started out a peer-to-peer lender. In simple terms, LendingClub provided a platform to match prospective borrowers with parties that were willing to fund them. In 2020, it ceased operating its peer-to-peer lending platform and transitioned into a conventional bank with the acquisition of Radius Bank.
The rebrand was announced in April 2026 and took effect that summer. The parent company is now Happen, Inc., the bank is Happen Bank, N.A., and the listing moved from the New York Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq stock exchange under the ticker symbol "HAPN". Existing loans and account terms were not affected by the change, and Happen Bank remains a member of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).
Reviews & News
At the time of writing, Happen Bank had approximately 88% 5-star reviews on Trustpilot from a total of just over 14,500, with an average rating of 4.7/5.
On their A+ accredited BBB profile, they have an average rating of 4.07/5 from 605 reviews, alongside 978 complaints over three years and 232 closed in the last year. Both profiles have already been renamed to Happen Bank, so the history under the old name carries across.
Do They Report to the Credit Bureaus?
Yes, though not on the strength of anything Happen Bank publish: their own site sets out no credit reporting policy, so the specifics sit in your loan agreement. NerdWallet report that Happen Bank report your loan payments to the three major credit bureaus: Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. Regular on-time payments in your credit file will likely increase your credit score and improve your chances of qualifying for credit in the future. However, failure to satisfy your repayment obligations could damage your credit score, making it more difficult to borrow again.

What we like?
Loan flexibility: Happen Bank personal loans cater for all types of borrowers. With loans between $1,000 and $75,000, they can be used to overcome short-term emergencies, as well as fund longer-term projects. Unlike many competitors, Happen Bank offer joint loans, which could improve your approval chances or land you a better rate.
Pay creditors directly: Many lenders don't provide the option to pay creditors directly, but Happen Bank offer to send your loan proceeds straight to your existing credit cards and personal loans. By restructuring your existing debt into a lower-cost personal loan, you can save significant amounts and/or accelerate your journey to becoming debt-free.
Check your rate: Borrowers can check their rate on the Happen Bank website and app, without any impact to their credit score. Even if you have an offer elsewhere, it might be worth seeing if Happen Bank can beat it.
Educational resources: The Happen Bank website has an array of educational content to help you understand credit and overcome expensive debt.
What we don't like?
Origination fees: Happen Bank may charge origination fees of up to 8% of the approved loan amount. While some borrowers may qualify for no origination fee, it is not clear how widely available those offers are. Origination fees are deducted from the loan proceeds before funding. For example, if you are approved for a $10,000 loan with a 5% origination fee, you'll only receive $9,500 in your bank account.
High maximum APR: Happen Bank's 5.96% floor is the lowest of any lender in these reviews, but the ceiling is 35.96%, so the advertised rate tells you very little until you check your own. A few prime-focused lenders cap in the mid-20s, though most of the market sits about where Happen Bank does.
Summary
With flexible loan options and a prequalification process that won't impact your credit score, Happen Bank are probably worth a look. However, depending on your credit profile, the combination of origination fees and potentially high APRs could mean you find better overall value elsewhere.
